Who We Are

The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is a public private initiative that has collaboratively evolved through consultations with multiple constituencies including Indian and International academia, state and central governments, multi & bi-lateral agencies and civil society groups. PHFI is a response to redress the limited institutional capacity in India for strengthening training, research and policy development in the area of public health. Structured as an independent foundation, PHFI adopts a broad, integrated approach to public health, tailoring its endeavours to Indian conditions and bearing relevance to the countries facing similar challenges and concerns. The PHFI focuses on broad dimensions of public health that encompass promotive, preventive and therapeutic services, many of which are frequently lost in policy planning as well as in popular understanding. The Training Division at PHFI focuses on implementing various capacity building initiatives that aim to upgrade the knowledge, skills and core competencies of healthcare professionals in clinical conditions and various public health domains.

Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre (DMDSC) established in 1991 by Dr. V Mohan and his late wife Dr. Rema Mohan has grown to become one of the largest chain of diabetes centres in the world with more than 450,000 registered patients with diabetes. It is also a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Non- Communicable Disease Prevention and Control as well as an International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Centre of Education. DMDSC currently has more than 48 branches in 10 states of India which help to extend diabetes care to a wider population. Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA) is the Education wing of Dr. Mohan's Group of Institutions. It was established with the mission of training doctors and other health care professionals in management of diabetes and its complications.

CCEBDM Journey So far….

In 2010, the Public Health Foundation of India launched a nationwide capacity-building program Certificate Course in Evidence Based Diabetes Management (CCEBDM) in Collaborations with DMDEA, to provide training on evidence-based diabetes management, by enhancing knowledge, skills, and core competencies of PCPs. CCEBDM was the first globally recognized course by International Diabetes Federation (IDF) from 2014 to 2016 for training primary care physicians. The course has been also recognized by South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies (SAFES) from 2017- 2019. In Lancet diabetes endocrinology, 2016, the model of this program was published.& Coffee table book- Unlocking New Ideas; Good, Replicable and innovative Practices, 2017 and won various awards for the capacity building. The Govt. of Kerala, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Reliance Industries Limited adopted this model for training of their Medical Officers. This course is also adopted by overseas country such as Myanmar, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Kabul University of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Health of Rwanda & covering five countries in East African Region.

As of now, CCEBDM covered 92 cities across 24 states in the country. The fundamental groups involved in this course are the National Experts, Regional Faculty, Observers and Participants. A panel of 17 National Experts, comprising some of India's nationally and internationally acclaimed Diabetologists and Endocrinologists, were involved in curriculum review and in deciding course execution. 271 Regional Faculty, who are some of the country's most prominent Diabetologists and Endocrinologists, trained more than 12,500 Primary Care Physicians in 271 centers across country. The ratio of trainer to participant was 1: 8-10. 61% of the participants had an MBBS degree and 39% had post graduate degrees in various medical fields. 150 eminent observers selected from all over the country were actively involved in regular monthly monitoring of the Program modality. A dedicated PHFI App was introduced to cater smooth conduction of Monitoring, different kind of tests and exam. It is a distinctive training program specifically designed to improve the knowledge, skill set and capacity of primary care physicians in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and referral of diabetes patients apart from clinical understanding of the disease for better patient outcomes. CCEBDM delivers evidence based education to physicians, who seek to upgrade their knowledge in order to improve their practicing skills to make significant contributions to community. Our extensive and ever expanding network has helped to achieve this aim.
